What are the distinctions between Paste, Mortar, and Concrete?

The process of combining a binding material with water is referred to as paste. When sand is incorporated into this mixture, it is designated as mortar, and when additional aggregate, such as gravel, is included, the result is concrete.

To enhance clarity and specificity, the term “binder” may precede these descriptors. For instance, one may refer to lime paste, cement mortar, or asphalt concrete.

Given that cement is the most commonly used binding material, the terms paste, mortar and concrete can be abbreviated to denote cement paste, cement mortar, and cement concrete, respectively.
