Investigation of the Usage of Colemanite By-products in Active Belite Cement Production

Within the scope of the project, it is aimed to reduce carbon emissions by replacing raw materials in the cement industry with the production of low-carbon cement with boron by products formed during the extraction of colemanite mineral from boron mining sites. The project, which was carried out with the General Directorate of Eti Maden Operations, was successfully completed on 23.12.2020.

The features of Boron Modified Active Belit cement within the scope of the studies are as follows.
• Reduction in 10% CO2 emission with active belitic cement produced at lower temperatures, 8-10% energy savings in the rotary kiln,
• 30% more insulating according to the thermal conductivity analysis results (compared to CEM I 42,5R cement),
• Production at lower temperatures without the need for new investments due to its different chemical composition,
• Suitable for mass concrete use (low hydration temperature cement) due to its hydration at a lower temperature,
• Impermeable concrete feature against chlorine and other chemicals that damage concrete,
• More resistant cement against Shrinkage Cracks.

Duties of TÜRKÇİMENTO R&D Institute
1. Characterization studies on boron by products and raw materials,
 2. Creating the final recipe with laboratory-scale burning analysis,
3. Pilot-scale BAB cement production with the final prescription,
4. Physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis of BAB cement,

Social Benefit
• Bringing value boron by product to the economy
• Up to 25% reduction in CO2 emissions
• Production of an environmentally friendly cement type
• Energy savings because of  low sintering temperature
